Logging Rushes

Review of footage

For the sequences of the footage I was pleased with the part where you see over Alex's shoulder and then it moves across to then show two people, since it was a good transition for the song lyrics "But not for me it shines for others" since you see the lens flare, so its like a flash of the sun, revealing the couple. I also quite liked the part of the sequence which had an overlap of Alex, staring off into a distance, sine its like a bunch of memories overlapping and then they disappear, then its just Alex and the person staring out to see, when they were together but then Alex disappears since she is with someone else now and that memory disappears too, this is later in the song, when he finally gets over it a bit and because they were all overlapped, it makes it look like it's going out of control. The sequence where Alex is slowed down and walking and it cuts to a flashback of his ex was good, since the footage was clear and it goes in time with the beat and then the walking is speeded up, in time to the music and I think it worked well.

The part where it plays "I got a few, tears to dry", could've been better since not much is happening and Alex is just standing there and then looks down, so it could be more interesting and he's on the side, which makes him less of the main focus a bit. With the "Im gonna swim in the seas of green, I tell ya", there could've been a better shot of it, specially since Alex looks down the whole time, which makes it look like he was reading off of something. The part after this with the "Im gonna run like im seventeen, forever", could've had better quality of filming, so when we were at the chalk pits we could've had him run and have different angles of it so then with the editing for that sequence it could've been a quick cut to the different shots of him running, rather than a really zoomed out clip of him running. We had to reshoot some singing bits, since Alex had a dead-face while singing, so it needed more energy.

Initial edit structure

For the structure of the video we will start by recording clips of the sun, since its called Stare into the sun and therefore there needs to be a sun somewhere in it and the lens flares would work well for this. Then will record Alex looking into the sun, then we will record the sky to show that there aren't clouds like in the song and then we would have Alex looking the couple since early on it plays "it shines for others and then we will record Alex looking sad, since it's a break up music video. We'll record some flashbacks, where there are multiple clips of the other person (Me/Catherine) who has broken up with the other (Alex). So after recording of the sky and then the birds, we will record a flashback of Alex staring at nothing and then there will be a transition, moving over Alex's shoulder revealing the couple. Then we will have Alex looking at a heart necklace, that they both had (since there were too) and Alex throws his. Then we will go to the chalk pits and record Alex walking there and thinking about the break up. We will then record parts of the school, where Alex sees the couple.

Timeline Paper Version

Applying appropriate visuals effects and transitions

One of the transitions I did was an overlap and then it zooms into an image and then zooms out. I used the cross zoom transition, which went over both of them. It goes to a close up of Alex's face with smaller clips overlapping, over Alex's face and then it zooms into the bottom right clip which is a wide shot of Alex's face from the side.

Another transition I did was when Alex was dancing and I overlapped the clips, this was a wide view and then when the Alex's were walking into the front, merging, I used a transition called film dissolve, this then made the Alex that was at the front disappear and then another Alex appeared, but was closer and sang with the lyrics.

Another transition I did was when it fades to black and shows a different clip and then the clips are all overlapped, the transition was called dip to black. In the clips it had a side wide view shot of Alex, overlapped with a wide view shot of Alex from behind and then there was another shot which was of the sky, which moved over the top of them.

Linking audio to visuals and applying audio effects

For the linking audio to the visuals, one of the parts I did this for was when he sings "Im feeling blue". I put the song on first and then I added the clip in and tried to sync them both up.

Another time I did this was when he sings, "Cuz theres a cloud she follows me round, wherever".

I also did this for the part where he sings "Now all the colours, they melt together".

Overall I think the recordings were good, however some could be improved. We could've done maybe some more shots and have maybe one more setting like the beach, to have that love feel and memory. I think some of my editing was good, some could be better like the Alex dancing and then the memories overlapping towards the end, since most at certain parts there were overlaps but because it was half normal recordings with a few transitions and the other half overlaps, it seemed a bit off, if there was more crazy stuff happening like rotating images and maybe different colours, it would've been better. I also think that the clip order could've been better since sometimes it would change to a different place and sometimes it would be in the same location but a different clip but sometimes it would suddenly be a different location, which is good occasionally but not too much. I do like some of the transitions I did, such as the part where Alex fades and reappears and it plays, "Now all the colours, they melt together". I also liked how late it goes a bit out of control with what's happening, since it makes it seem like Alex is conflicted with his emotions and then the memories start fading and then it goes to Alex and the other person (Me/Catherine) staring out to sea together and then Alex fades out of the memory and she does, so it's like hes moving on. I think the slowed down clip of Alex walking and flashbacks are  happening were good.

This was one of the parts i liked, with the dancing. Alex moving into one could've been done better so he roughly merges into one, without any extra Alexs showing.

This was the memory part, where they both fade away eventually and Alex gets over it.

I also liked this part, since its like a part of him is gone and all thats left is a heart necklace they both had and he throws it out of anger and I think it adds to it since it has more meaning and its not just emotions showing, theres actually something else there that has meaning to the main character.

I think this clip was really good, since the focus was good and the lighting was and Alexs face has a shadow across it, which adds to him feeling sad and hes staring at the couple and the hall is empty which makes it seem like everything is empty ever since she left.
